Nevada Camel Company

ABOUT US

Nevada Camel Company is owned by Gary & Diane Jackson. We are often asked: "Why camels?" Gary's reply is "momentary lapse of intelligent thinking!" However, the truth of the matter is that in 1984 he discovered camel racing in Virginia City and thought it sounded like fun. Three years later he was not only racing in Virginia City, but was a member of the delegation representing Nevada at the Alice Springs Lion's Club Camel Races in Australia. That was also the year he became the first American to win the International Camel Cup race. Gary is quite well known in Alice Springs as the only American to enter into a two-man camel race, riding backwards on the camel. He came in second in the race, but was endeared to Australians for taking the challenge with good sportsmanship and a sense of humor!

While in Australia, he saw how having his own camels could be a good business, so soon invested in his first four - Michael, Merlin, Milagro, and Robert. Within the next few years Saddam joined the herd, followed by Paca.

But what about Diane, you ask? Well, let's just say Diane found a man with camels for pets and a one-of-a-kind pick-up line irresistible! She's been intrigued by the big, lovable camels and the man who loves them ever since.

We are located on Highway 50, 22 miles East of Carson City, Nevada. Not only are we on the historic Pony Express route, but also the route used by strings of camels carrying salt from the Fallon salt marshes to the Virginia City mines in the 1860's. Nearby, in Dayton, NV, are the Camel Barns that housed some of the camels used to haul supplies up to Virginia City.
